The Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco opens today an exhibition drawn from one of the nation's most important collections of 20th century African American art. The selections from the Hewitt Collection of African American Art include definitive examples of work by artists such as Henry Ossawa Tanner, Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Jacob Lawrence and Hale Woodruff.
In 1993, Bank of America bought the collection from John and Vivian Hewitt, who had assembled it. The bank has made it available for presentation at MoAD through the Bank of America Art Exhibition Program. Info: (415) 358-7200, http://www.moadsf.org/.- Kenneth Baker
